Toronto, ON

Dr. Darlene Ehrenberg: "Working at the Intimate Edge"

Boundaries & Risks: Working with erotic feelings and fantasies

TO VIEW THE FULL CONFERENCE BROCHURE, CLICK ON THE PDF LINK ABOVE

Erotic feelings and fantasies can and have posed a threat for analysts throughout the history of psychoanalysis. The focus of this presentation will be on the dangers of foreclosing the development of such feelings and fantasies. The question to be considered is how can we create an analytic space in which such feelings and be constructively engaged. Clinical data will be used to illustrate how working in the immediate interactive moment, at what Dr. Ehrenberg calls "the intimate edge" of the analytic relationship, can allow for dealing with such feelings in ways that allow for expanding (rather than foreclosing) the analytic possibilities in crucial ways.
