Extension Program

2008 Extension Program
Program One:
The Couch Under the Bo Tree:
Psychoanalysis in Dialogue with Buddhism

Co-ordinator: Sarah Turnbull

We are pleased to welcome guest lecturer Jeffrey Rubin, an international scholar who practices, teaches and writes in and about the intersecting worlds of Psychoanalysis and Buddhism.

The Buddha achieved enlightenment while meditating under a bo tree and Freud aimed for enlightenment using free associations and the couch.  Since the 1980's the dialogue between Psychoanalysis and Buddhism has grown increasingly vibrant.  Both traditions promote self understanding and the working through of suffering.  Each tradition fosters distinctive aspects of psychological and spiritual well-being.  This course explores the interface between them, offering critical reflections on their similarities and differences in  ideology and praxis  while including clinical considerations.

The lectures trace analysts' early dialogue with  selected aspects of Zen meditation and philosophy ; explore spirituality's effectiveness as a psychotherapy;  address the intersection of  Buddhism and Psychoanalysis in the domains of the body, self and the present moment; and approach the expansion of psychoanalysis to become a practice of contemplation.
